The most common question from prospective EV buyers is also the most misunderstood: will the battery fail? Major manufacturers back EV batteries with 8-year, 160,000 km warranties guaranteeing at least 70% of original capacity. Real-world fleet data is increasingly reassuring.
What the Data Actually Shows
Fleet analysis by Geotab of over 10,000 EVs found an average degradation rate of 1.8% per year — down from 2.3% in 2019 as battery management systems have improved. At 1.8%/year, a battery that starts at 100% capacity retains approximately 83% after 10 years. Recurrent Auto, which studied 20,000 EVs from 2016–2024, found that fewer than 1% had required battery replacements — most of those due to recalls, not failure.
Factors That Affect EV Battery Lifespan
Temperature
Heat is the primary enemy of lithium-ion battery cells. Charging or storing a battery at high temperatures (above 30°C) accelerates chemical degradation. Australian summers — particularly in Queensland, Western Australia and South Australia — create real exposure. Modern EVs use liquid thermal management systems to mitigate this, but parking in shade or a garage during peak heat still helps. Cold temperatures (below 5°C) temporarily reduce range but do not cause permanent damage at Australian temperatures.
Depth of Discharge and State of Charge
Charging to 100% and discharging to 0% on a regular basis accelerates cell stress. The 20–80% rule — keeping your battery between 20% and 80% state of charge for everyday use — meaningfully extends cell life. DC Fast Charging Frequency
