Solar Savings: Look at the Whole Year
A high electricity bill in one month does not mean your solar is underperforming. Annual savings give you an accurate picture of your investment.
Solar panels reduce your carbon footprint, lower grid dependence and — for most Australian households — deliver meaningful bill savings. But the timing of when you see those savings varies dramatically by season. Looking at any single bill in isolation will mislead you.
Why Monthly Bills Mislead
Solar output is tied directly to available sunlight. In Sydney or Melbourne, a December system might produce 30–40 kWh/day while a July system might produce 12–18 kWh/day from the same panels. Your bill reflects this swing — summer bills often drop to the minimum service charge while winter bills may remain significant even with solar.
Summer: Building Credits
During long summer days, most properly-sized systems over-produce during peak sunlight hours. Excess electricity exported to the grid earns feed-in credits with your retailer. Over a summer quarter, these credits can offset hundreds of dollars of future bills.
Winter: Drawing on Credits
Production naturally falls in winter. Electricity consumption typically rises as heating loads increase. Without a banked summer of credits, a winter bill can look alarming. But this is not a system fault — it is seasonal physics. A high July bill does not mean your panels have stopped working.
How to Calculate Your True Solar Savings

Solar systems are designed around annual production and annual consumption targets — not monthly snapshots. One bad month means nothing; one bad year means investigate.
